Recurrent Miscarriage

Recurrent Miscarriage

Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) effects 1 to 2% of women. We recognize that these losses are devastating. If you have suffered two losses and are ready to look for some answers, SpringCreek providers and associates are here to support you on your journey.

The first step is diagnostic. We want to help you understand the reasons for your recurrent losses.

  1. Structural Irregularities
Uterine septums, scarring, fibroids, polyps, and endometriomas all can impact a woman’s body’s ability to carry a pregnancy to term. Many of these structures are identified either during a diagnostic Saline Sonogram, or HSG. Surgery or a combination of surgery and medications are the optimal treatment courses for these obstacles to achieving a successful pregnancy. Being evaluated by a surgeon who specializes in fertility often provides the best surgical treatment outcomes for these underlying problems. Dr. Groll is board certified in both OB/Gyn and Reproductive Endocrinology and will work with you to develop a plan that will best address these issues.

  2. Hormonal Irregularities
Having the appropriate balance of FSH, LH, Estrogen, Progesterone, Thyroid, Testosterone and other hormones is critical to both achieving and maintaining a healthy pregnancy. Through the diagnostic process at SpringCreek, we will work with you to find your baseline hormonal levels and create a treatment regimen that will help support the optimal hormonal balance to achieve a successful pregnancy.

  3. Genetic Variations
There are numerous genetic variations that can lead to recurrent loss. As part of the diagnostic work-up, the providers will suggest genetic testing and perhaps a karyotype to understand if a genetic incompatibility is preventing you from achieving a full term pregnancy. Depending upon the results of these tests, either medical therapy during an IUI or more advance reproductive technologies such as IVF with preimplantation genetic screening (PGS or PGD) might be suggested as the optimal treatment plan.

  4. Immune Issues
Pregnancy creates a unique challenge for a woman’s immune system. The woman’s body has to recognize that the embryo is a special entity that needs to be nurtured and protected. Women whose immune systems are not functioning correctly may struggle with RPL. Their bodies may perceive the embryo as an invasive foreign body that needs eliminated. Our understanding of the complexities of the immune system are evolving. SpringCreek providers use diagnostic tests and evidence based treatment options to provide hope and successful outcomes for women who face these health challenges.

If you have suffered from RPL, there is hope. We understand that you have to go through the thing you fear most - another loss - in order to go on to achieve your dream of having a successful pregnancy and take home a baby.
